Mary Shelley miscarried and almost died while waiting for the doctor to arrive. Mary edited Percy's palms and took it upon herself to make him beloved. Matilda was not published in her lifetime or even soon after. It didn't come out until a hundred years after she died. She refused an American actor and seems to have refused his friend Washington Irving as well.
