Is Putin's Russia Trying to Imitate Democracies?
Dictators have been trying to mimic democracies since the end of cold war. There are many reasons for doing so, one is that it's a lot easier to with a subtle hand than wit with a heavy one. But if we have this perfect storm of alite fissures, international pressures and mass discontent then this could lead to a putons gutt respond. The knee jerk response is gont going to be, ok, if there's public criticism to me, i'm going to shut down that space. That can be a very risky strategy for dictators because it can lead to a back lash that is not anticipated.
