The Parallels Between World War I and World War II
Buchanan gives examples of when the US could have gone to war, didn't and things turned out far better than anyone could reasonably assume compared to had a war been declared. In 1964, China had Project 596, where they displayed their ability to have a nuclear weapon, and within a decade, Kissinger and Nixon are shaking hands with Mao. And it is a similar situation, geopolitically speaking, it's been documented that this Thucydides trap, the rising power that's threatening the world hegemon, led to World War I.
