The incidence of sudden cardiac death related to acute exertions that sports related sudden cardiac death is higher in competitive athletes. The absolute number of sudden cardiac deaths is actually greater during recreational sports due to the sheer number of individuals, particularly adults greater than the age of 35 participating in recreational activities. However, even in younger age groups, the majority of exercise related or sports related cardiac arrests occur in those not engaged in organized competitive sports.
