The basic idea is that you can aggregate all the transactions together into a single check point and put that on to the underlying layer one blockchain. If there's a problem, someone out there is incentivized to find it because it's free money. Optimistic rollups remind me of the former model where you give the trust upfront until proven wrong. It's like how humans engage is this model, essentially.
