The Role of Wagner in the Syrian War
Wagner's roots were in the Donbass conflict, where it provided deniable forces under the control of some road nasty neo-Nazis. The Kremlin did not want to deploy troops both for the risk internationally and domestically. Wagner emerged as market driven, and that also speaks to its role as a military force. It is still active in Africa, but too often presented as some kind of active measure by Russia.
