The Gabrielle's Course
Vasco De Gama led a fleet of Portuguese explorers into the Atlantic in 1497. The expedition was about to embark on a maneuver for which there was no known precedence. From 700 miles south of the Cape Verde Archipelago, instead of following the familiar contours of the African coast, they turned their rudders to the southwest and plunged into the center of the Atlantic In a huge, looping curve. To give this modern context, that's like flying from Lisbon to New Delhi.
