Is There Evidence That Maggots Are Really Effective?

Maggots give off a smell of ammonia when they're cleaning up wounds. Why aren't they used more widely then if they're so good? I don't know whether it's education for other healthcare professionals, especially out in the community,. or whether GPs look at the cost of one unit of them and think, oh, that's too expensive. The quickest way to clean up this wound and to get it to heal would be to put a bag of maggots on. But most of them will... they just terrified of losing their legs.
