There was a few year period there where it seems like culture writers were obsessed with the concept of the cool girl. There was a debate about the book and whether it was actually misogynist and not feminist because Amy was the sort of character who made women look bad. And I think one of the things the novel is about is how you need a character like that to have a thriller.
