The element of surprise has worked countless times 31 years in my career. Even if the subject does not want to talk to me and starts thinking about it, then I can work a deal right here that I can pass on to the US Attorney's office,. The prosecutor will tell the judge that he cooperated, admitted to everything. Let's cut him a deal. It's really good for everybody. They don't know how much information you have. Most importantly, they don't have an attorney if they don't know your after, which gives me an opportunity to speak to them. That always gives me the edge. Always.
