Is There a Long History of Natural Experiments?
The whole idea of using this random variation actually has quite a long history going far back the first ones I think even go back to the 1920s. John Snow tried to figure out where the cholera epidemic was coming from and he figured out that a lot of people who died were getting that drinking water from the same pump as other people who died. It's really in the 80s and 90s that people the equivetricians became more aware of how important it is for us to use these natural experiments.
