The One You Feed

CHAPTER

The Moral Equivalent of War

I think what Thoreau does is that he repeatedly goes and works with day laborers. He thinks that walking in the shoes of someone who lives very differently gives us some indication about how we are to treat those individuals who we might hire. And I think that his willingness to work alongside people who make manual labor their living is, I think, an important instruction for us. If we're going to hire someone to do our lawn, at least we need to know how hot it is in July. At least weneed to know how thirsty you get when you're out there.
