In march 17 99, the plague started spreading ominously through the ranks of the french army. So before leaving jaffa, bonaparte set up a plague tal to quarantine sick troops. He allegedly went and visited the victims personally to prove to the rest of his men that there was nothing to fear. But it is entirely possible that the entire visit was concocted propaganda. Napoleon personally commissioned this painting in 18 o four on the eve of his self coronation as emperor.
