The Talmud says that whoever dons Phyllan, their brain is going to be gouged out of their skull. Jewish people can bring it to the dove, why? Just as a dove can only save itself with its wings, so do the Jewish people only say themselves with their prayer. The idea here is that the soul is something which is committed to doing what's right, even at great personal peril.
