Introduction

Fish and chips first appeared in the 1860s. By 1910 there were over 25,000 fish and chipshops around Britain. The practice of frying fish in batter was introduced to the UK in the 16th century by Jewish immigrants from Spain and Portugal. Fish and chips are now a popular dish in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Indonesia and many other countries.
