The Death of Morris Barrymore
Drew's great grandfather, Morris Barry Moore was a particularly colorful character. He indulged reportedly in many affairs and the myth goes that he nearly died in 1879 after winning a game of poker when the loser shot him in the stomach. His son immediately took him to an asylum where he was diagnosed with an advanced case of syphilis, which could affect brain function. Now, sadly, John Sr. reportedly struggled with alcohol addiction throughout his life. And by the mid 1930s, his addiction had worsened so significantly that most film studios were unwilling to hire him,. In the year before Drew Barrymore's grandfather's death, he declared bankruptcy.
