Numenara Discovery - The Cypher System
If you're looking to get back to the pure version of D&D from its oldest days, old-school essentials is where I would go. The game probably works best for shorter-term campaigns rather than long campaigns. Numenara Discovery is really kind of the core Numenara book. It's a very straight, very big on the idea of rolling for your attributes and character death happens very quickly.
