In the early 1990s, Microsoft was trying to figure out a way to connect all its offices with the internet at once. The company had been using part-time cable for much of that time; now it's fully connected. Bill Gates and his team were working on what they thought would be Windows' next killer application: the browser. They decided against RTC IP in favor of WinSockets because nothing else could scale.
