Bob Greene: The idea that we need to measure the demand for labor isn't always captured in the actual number of people employed because there are other factors involved. He says job openings, if you look at job openings, the economy looks like it's still red hot. But then you look at something like hires, which is also part of the Joel survey, and it's gone off a cliff. And so if we look at this ambiguity across data series, the establishment survey is okay. Household survey is bad. Joel's job opening looks really good, but tires looks bad. That's why markets continuously say it's the bad stuff, not the good stuff.
