What's the Relationship Between Learning and Veneration?

When people say, learn your history, they mean venerate British history. They mean keep the statue of Cecil Rhodes up. Look at these men as kind of, you know, founding fathers from whom you are descended in some way. It's actually demanding a particular emotional relationship to it. I find these contradictions encapsulate in conversations around who's the greatest Britain of all time.
