Inventor louis de gar sold his process to the french government in 1839. The French government released it free as a gift on august nineteenth, 18 39. De gars did manage to patent his process in england, ireland and scotland before the french government released it. As the deguerotype took on a life of its own, and the field of photography continued to advance through other inventors improving upon it, degar retired again. He was financially set a fire destroyed a lot of his early work in 18 39, and didn't rebuild his burnt studio after that.
