Domain Specific Versus Domain General Skills?
I would more think of it as understanding a procedure, but that's different from being able to carry it out. I can't solve a chess problem without knowledge of how chess pieces move strategies and techniques. But since I don't know the domain specific theories underlying certain things in social psychology, I can't formulate a research hypothesis. And if I don’t know that enough to formulate a hypothesis, it makes it very hard for me. If a chess master tries to play go, he or she will be as bad as I am in playing go. That doesn't mean that a certain way of thinking does not apply elsewhere.
