The Airlines Deregulation Act in 1978 was introduced. It removed federal control over many critical aspects of the aviation industry. The law encouraged the growth of new carriers and entry into new markets for existing ones. Newcomers benefited from the transition, whereas veteran companies like Pan Am struggled to reduce their cost.
