Theophrastus, in his comparison of bad acts, says that the offenses which are committed through desire are more blamable. Women did not fulfill the role of philosopher in ancient Rome or ancient Greece. The Stoics were very progressive in many ways, but after enough time passes, everybody's got their shortcomings. You don't tell someone who is bipolar that they can think themselves out of being bipolar.
