The Origins of Dionysus

The notion of a vegetation deity goes back to his lost in the mists of time. And we find Dionysian-like figures throughout the Mediterranean. So, where does Dionysus come from? And does he have a cult center? This is the interesting sort of tension or set of circumstances that I think informs the uniqueness of his cult structures.
