Inconcious exists to protect us from traumas and pain that would overwhelm us otherwise. So, the way that the unconscious protects us is we develop unconscious defense mechanisms. We don't want to know something that will hurt, right? I don’t want to remember that my dad wasn't great. Okay. These are resistances. They're called resistances and that's what therapy, at least analysis works with all the time.
