"Most social scientists try to step around the problem of free will," he says. "Our moral codes, our legal codes all assume free will." The quantum view has its own problems with free will because some people say it can't be random. But those particles down there, they're purposefully collapsing themselves in a certain way,. So not only does consciousness go all the way down, but so does purpose in a sense.
