I was reading a book about myth and it talked about the myths of some Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. What's fascinating about that is that we can date when the mountains in question last had a volcanic incident. So we can actually go, this really happened. And now you have something that is over 10,000 years old that may well have wound up saving lives. That wasn't necessarily what it was built to do but it's something that it has done and it's lasted.
