If you align with the CEO, you will be gone in six to nine months. Your odds of lasting are very low. Director can play that card if he peeking on a CMO can not. Ultimately it's your job is to get results. If you have to pay lip service in one direction and put real energy in the other, I'd give the lip service starts the CEO.
