There used to be so many different systems of measurement. In France, every different province would have a different definition of a pint. So in the run up to the French Revolution, there were all these different units within France that really created a lot of friction for the country. The metric system is certainly abstract because they wanted to derive the value of these units from cutting edge science at the time.
