Is There a Way to Add New Variables to Machine Learning?
There's ways to approach adding new variables that explicitly orthogonalize off of existing variables. And this is an approach that is taken in a variety of off the shelf machine learning methods. So you learn a model based on one feature, and then you go back to all the other features and you learn the model that best explains the residual returns That are not already explained by the feature that you had previously modeled. The idea of searching for new explanatory variables based on residualization makes a lot of sense to me.
