Increasing State Authoritarianism in Texas
More than 100 police officers attended a hearing in Houston, Texas earlier this week to intimidate witnesses and legislators voting on whether to expand the county police budget. Police funding has been on the rise with 1.3 billion going to law enforcement in 2022, increasing to 1.4 billion in 2023. That accounts for 64% of the total budget, more than public health, transportation, economic opportunity, and the environment combined. The day of the hearing, according to witnesses present, quote, every inch of the corridors and the commissioner's courtroom was lined with law enforcement officers.
