Kitty Black Perkins: The First Black Designer

Kitty Black Perkins was a toy company's first black designer. In the 1970s, Barbie had already been criticized for promoting unrealistic body standards and sexualizing young girls. Kitty pushed to make a black Barbie who wanted this Barbie to have the name Barbie and not just be an accessory. Today we see Barbies portrayed by actors of different shapes, sizes, colors and abilities.
