The Second Founding, Not Refounding

The original Constitution was a heavily liberty and self-governing document. It had a lot of self-government language, but not a lot of equality language. The founders did get it wrong with respect to slavery. And so it took the 14th Amendment and the 15th Amendment to say, you know, race is certainly not grounds to discriminate.
