Madison's Argument for a Geographically Dispersed Republic
In 1787, Madison made the case for a geographically dispersed republic. He argued that instead of seeing size and scale as a problem or a weakness, it is an asset if you increase its size. The argument was counterintuitive to most people, but wins the day at least in 1787-88. It's more explicitly made in the Federalist Papers in Federalist number 10.
