Count Sergey Vitter grew up in present-day Georgia, where his first job was selling train tickets at a station in Tbilisi. He saw the Siberian train line as a chance to populate vast wastes of land and secure the eastern side of the empire from attack by Asian powers. The problem will be the sheer scale of the endeavor and raising the funds to build it.
