The Moral Importance of Utilitarianism
The problem for utilitarianism is I don't think it gives us right answers about cases we've taken for granted in our conversation over the past hour. There's something about the humanness or the personhood that matters for its own sake. But the human person has got it and cats do not. Even if we were to say that people were to inflict great harm on some individual members without their consent, it would be impermissible.
