Type X and Type I Behavior

Daniel Pink calls type X and type I behavior. Type X means extrinsically motivated, type I means intrinsically motivated behaviour. People will naturally tend to behave in intrinsically motivated ways when there are no rewards for doing good work. You can make someone behave in more of an intrinsic way if you provide them with the right conditions. It's difficult to force people to be intrinsically motivated but it is possible to make them do things because they're bored or just don't like working.
