Ruth Ben-Ghiat: Escalators once ate my shoe. I was at an event called Intel ISEF, which is like Miss and Mr World but for geeks. And I had these like little shoes on and it got caught in the escalator and dragged in and it like crushed my foot. "You've just affirmed a lot of people's childhood fears," she says.
