Wallace's Diametrical Opposition to Race

George Wallace wanted to run for president in 1968 as an independent. He reached out to BYU Apostle Reed Benson, who was a strong supporter of the Thurman-Wallace ticket. President McKay turned it down because he didn't want to lose his teammates. The two men later met and became close friends; they would go on to be apostles together.
