This chapter explores the aftermath of Matthew's death and the impact it has on the main character and his wife, Claretta. They are grieving deeply and experiencing the well-intentioned gestures of their congregation, as well as the intrusion of hymn-singing visitors. The main character opens the door to the light and confronts those who meant to comfort them, causing them to leave. Claretta, having grown accustomed to the dark, resents the intrusion and blames the main character for either inviting the world back in or allowing a life without Matthew.
