Cicero was a slum lord, among other things. He owned a bunch of tenements in the city of Rome. And he charged exorbitant rents and tenements that were notoriously dirty and dangerous because they would burn down with some regularity. Parenty also documents how the nobility had over the generations bought up more and more of the public lands.
