The Government's Plan to Penalise Asylum Seekers

Since the year 2000, we've offered protection to 29,000 Afghans who claimed asylum through the normal asylum process. The main proposal in the new nationality and borders bill that's relevant here is the plan to penalise asylum seekers who satisfy two criteria. If a person enters illegally, such as by small boats or lorry, and from a country considered by the UK government to be safe, such as France,. Government will try to make them inadmissible to the asylum system and try to remove them. UN refugee agencies said quite plainly that the proposals are not consistent with the convention. So we can expect that policy to be challenged in the courts, should it make its way onto the statute book
