The Brooklyn Navy Yard closed in 1966 after more than 50 years of service. The city bought the site for $24 million and tried to find a tenant that would create jobs, but it never materialized. In 1997, Vinegar Hill became an official New York historic district. By the 90s, the Navy Yard was about to be reborn.
