Joseph F. Smith was the sixth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He knew it is the place where his father had been killed, and it's a place of trauma for him. For years after the church purchased the property, the jail continued to function as a home. Until in the 1930s, church leaders were ready to begin the work of restoring the building.
