The most initiating event, the thing that makes it occur, make them need to have an amputation is they get a foot ulcer. Foot ulcers are very common in patients who have diabetes but if it's unmanaged, untreated, 85% of them can have an amputations. About 75,000 patients who do undergo a lower extremity amputation is related to diabetes. Other causes may include peripheral vascular disease, neuropathy and even trauma.
