The Nullification of the Constitution
James Madison tried to obscure the nature of what had gone on during those years. He didn't want to be associated with nullification, even though he'd been the principal drafter of the Virginia resolution in 1798. So that is why it matters that that word, for some reason, was like radioactive. To have Jefferson actually have uttered it makes it a little easier to get away with saying it today.
