"It's always been very religious there's a deep sense of camaraderie and the lectures they always feel like kind of softly spoken sermons," he says. "From a skeptical standpoint I did my best to come across as on their side but it was I've always been pretty skeptical of the ideology so they pick up on that pretty quickly and then get really hostile." The film is based on his conversations with academics about identity studies at universities in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
