Synthetic biology is a new computing manufacturing platform. It's the full suite of possible applications both on the inputs and on the outputs to create the products that we want exactly. In 2000 there was an important paper published by by Michael Elowitz at Caltech which showed creation of a synthetic oscillator inside a E. coli cell. He produced glowing bacteria fluorescent bacteria that on this beautiful 20 minute time lapse you can see videos of it online made these fluorescent bacteria glow and shrink and glow and go dark and Glow and don't go dark. That was one of the first examples of synthetic biology was 20 years ago in California.
