The Structural Engineering Podcast
The Impact of UV Degradation on Fiber Glass and Composites
We generally either use A325 because of its availability, or if it's a corrosive environment, sometimes we'll use stainless bolts. We have had some really unique projects where, and this was an application I didn't mention earlier, FRP or composites in general are inert to radio interference. So when you cut the threads after the fact, you obviously damage that surfacing veil. And so the glass fibers are exposed to UV and you have the potential for accelerated degradation.
